Measuring
How to measure an area for sod square feet (sq.ft.)
Use these methods to figure how many square feet of sod is needed. It is best to run out of sod than to have too much due to its perishable nature. Our sod is sold by the square foot (sq.ft.) so please measure in feet.
The following is how to measure different shaped areas. Get a pencil and paper, and draw the areas to be sodded. Measure the areas and write down your measurements on the drawing. Break up the areas into the shapes and figure out the square footage of each area. Add up the totals from the different shapes and you will know how many square feet of sod you need.
Square or Rectangle
To figure the area of a square or rectangle, measure the Length & Width and multiply.
Length x Width = Area
12 x 35 = 420 sq.ft.
Right Triangle
A Right Triangle has one 90º corner. To figure the area of a right triangle, multiply the two sides that contact the right angle and divide by 2
Length x Width / 2 = Area
12 x 35 = 420 ÷ 2 = 210 sq.ft.
Circles
To figure the area of a circle, take the radius times the radius, then multiply by 3.14. Radius is a straight line from the center of a circle to the outside of the circle.
(Radius x Radius) x 3.14 = Area
6 x 6 = 36 x 3.14 = 113 sq.ft.
Irregular Areas
Irregular areas, break into one of the shapes. Figure out each shapes sq.footage. Circle is cut in half. Add up all the areas for total sq.ft. The sq.ft. for the circle is divided in 2.
56.5 + 420 + 210 = 353 sq.ft.
